A fifth-year law student won third prize for their presentation of a partially critical gloss on the CJEU judgment.

We are delighted to inform you that Ms Aleksandra Pientka, a fifth-year law student at the University of Oxford’s Faculty of Law, won third prize for her critical analysis of the Court of Justice of the European Union’s judgment in case C-277/24, Adjak, delivered on 27 February 2025.

A total of 38 students from across Poland took part in this year’s competition. Nineteen of these works qualified for the final, which took place on 7 May 2025 at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Łódź.

The XXVIII All-Poland Scientific Conference for Students, ‘Contemporary Problems of Jurisprudence in Tax Matters’, together with a competition for the best commentary on a ruling by the NSA, WSA, TK or CJEU in tax matters from 2023 to 2025, is an event organised by the Centre for Documentation and Tax Studies at the University of Łódź and CRIDO. It is a prestigious event with a long tradition in the academic community. It is the most important competition of its kind in Poland.

The subject matter of the ruling that was put to a vote involved a member of a capital company’s board of directors challenging the factual findings and legal qualification of the company’s tax liability with respect to the institution of third-party joint and several liability for tax.

Ms. Aleksandra Pientka is participating in a seminar led by Dr Piotr Stanislawiszyn, from the WPIA Department of Economic and Financial Law.
