FIDE Congress – summary

The FIDE Congress (Fédération Internationale pour le Droit Européen / International Federation for European Law) is one of the most important cyclical events devoted to the law of the European Union, held this year in Katowice, Poland. It is held every three years and brings together representatives of the legal community – academics, judges, attorneys at law, barristers, officials of the EU institutions and experts – from all over Europe.

On the last day, during the plenary session of the FIDE Congress, Prof. UO Dr Alicja Jagielska-Burduk took part in a panel. Prof. dr hab. Marek Safjan and Prof. Silvana Sciarra also participated in the panel. The panel was devoted to documents developed with the participation of the European Law Institute: Charter of Fundamental Constitutional Principles of a European Democracy and ELI-Mount Scopus European Standards of Judicial Independence. These documents were presented by Professor Takis Tridimas (Luxembourg Centre for European Law).

Prof. UO Dr. Jagielska-Burduk spoke about the role of lawyers in the international debate on the rule of law, emphasising the importance of professional secrecy, legal education and the challenges of new technologies and AI in the work of attorneys at law and judges. She also referred to the consultation on the Rule of Law Report (publication is planned for July this year) and the links between the state of the rule of law and the economic health of EU countries.
